I have been working as a GP since 1998 and joined the practice in 2010. I am happy to see all aspects of General Practice. I have special interests in Women’s Health and contraception (including coil fits and implants), Pediatrics and Dermatology. (I am involved in minor surgery in the practice). I also work some of the time at UWE seeing the students.

I completed my GP training in Lancashire before moving to Bristol a few years ago. I am interested in all aspects of general practice particularly women’s/young people’s health. I have a keen interest in medical journalism and write for GP magazine and other publications.

I qualified from Nottingham Medical School in 2002 and completed my training for General Practice in Newcastle. I enjoy all aspects of general practice but have a particular interest in diabetes, dermatology and mental health.

I qualified from Medical School in 1998 and spent some years working in hospital medicine before joining the general practice in 2003. I enjoy all areas of general practice but have a special interest in heart disease. Alongside my work at the surgery, I work at the University of Bristol where I am involved in research relevant to general practice.

I qualified in 2003 and worked in hospital medicine for several years. I have been working in General practice since 2011, having completed my GP training in Cornwall. I moved to Bristol in 2013 and have been working here ever since. During term time I also work at the UWE Health Center once a week. I enjoy many aspects of General Practice but in particular, general medicine and women’s health.

I qualified from Liverpool University in 2011 and moved to Bristol to complete my GP training.  I joined The Old School Surgery in 2017.  I enjoy all aspects of general practice but have a particular interest in palliative care,  women’s health and contraception ( including fitting coils and implants).  I also perform some joint injections and am involved in medical student teaching.

After a year of working in New Zealand, I returned to Bristol to complete my GP training.  I joined The Old School Surgery as a salaried GP in September 2017, and enjoy seeing all aspects of GP, in particular palliative care, young people’s health and general medicine.

I have been working as a salaried GP at The Old School Surgery since November 2019. I enjoy all aspects of General Practice but have a particular interest in women’s health and lifestyle medicine.

Nursing Team

The nursing team hold daily routine surgeries for dressings, bandaging, pill checks, smears, coil checks, and injections (childhood and routine travel) but in addition, run numerous clinics. The clinics include asthma, diabetes, COPD, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke/TIA, and mental health annual reviews.

Nurse Practitioners and Special Care of the Elderly Team

Our Nurse Practitioners, supported by the care of Special Care of the Elderly Team. They provide home visits to housebound and vulnerable patients and support the GPs with the care of patients in Nursing and Residential Homes.

I qualified as a mental health nurse in 2013 and worked in acute mental health in Plymouth for a year and a half before moving to Australia in 2015. I worked in A&E, with the psychiatry liaison team and spent some time working in community mental health in Sydney before moving back to the UK in 2020 to take up my current role at The Old School Surgery.

Hello, I’m Shelley and I have been a mental health nurse for over 10 years. I have worked in a wide range of settings from assessment to inpatient psychiatric intensive care to community nursing including time as an Outreach nurse with homeless people and in hostels. I joined the surgery in August 2021 where we offer appointments to discuss mental health-related concerns and provide support, advice and referrals where appropriate.

In addition to managing many of the medication requests and medication queries our team have daily appointments available for medication reviews and long-term condition reviews such as asthma, diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, stroke, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular risk. They can optimise treatment and provide lifestyle advice to support our patients in managing their health conditions. Appointments are usually over the telephone but can be in person if needed. Our pharmacists also support our GPs and Nurse Practitioners in reviewing the medication of our patients living in Residential and Nursing Homes.

James Burns

Operations Manager

James is responsible for the operational day-to-day running of the surgery. He oversees the management of estate maintenance, health and safety, IT and patient experience including handling any complaints or compliments we may receive.

Claire is responsible for the care patients receive when they initially contact us for help. This could be in person, by telephone or via our online access portal Klinik. Claire also manages our large team of Care Navigators.

Tim Newman

Practice Experience Manager

Tim spent 20 years working at sea on cruise ships as a Hotel General Manager before joining us in 2021. He uses his own customer service knowledge, patient and staff feedback and ideas to continuously improve the practice experience for patients and staff. He is also responsible for planning and delivering our large-scale vaccination clinics, such as Covid-19 and Flu.

Medical Secretaries

Our medical secretaries share the job so the practice has a daily secretarial cover. Their workload is varied but is primarily arranging referrals, choosing and booking, and hospital liaison.

There is a full administration team underpinning the back-office functions of The Surgery, covering prescription requests, notes summarising, medical reports administration and support to the clinicians.
